Why Mindset Matters

Why Mindset Matters by Cecily Elmas of The Corker Collective.

I worked as a part time educator at Lululemon at the first Ottawa location in 2004. Back then development was extremely encouraged (a nice way to say develop yourself or you won’t last a day). I was given a set of CD’s called the psychology of achievement by Brian Tracy by my store manager with “no strings attached.” For those that may not know, I drink development for breakfast. That’s my cheeky way of saying that if something is not supporting my mental fitness or physical goals, I rarely spend time doing it. Where purpose exists, that support my goals + wellbeing, I’m all in.

There I was listening to these CD’s one after the other in my 400 square ft. apartment. What was a huge shock and made me belly laugh at times, was that this man Brian Tracy thought I could just say the opposite of my negative thoughts and poof, everything would change. Now this was in 2004 so the studies about the growth mindset were not as mainstream back then.

Little did I know that this was the beginning of my new path forward. Fast forward to today and my kids, Bodhi and Luna, are chanting “Brian Tracy, Brian Tracy” in the car whenever we’re looking for a parking spot.

Mindset is what we have to determine yum, yuk, good, bad, like, don’t like, cry, laugh. We are always making up stories in our head. Have you heard this sentence, “we are meaning making machines?” Well this can be true for most if not all of us. We rarely stop to ask someone what they’re thinking about us as they pass us on the street, or ask our boss what they’re really thinking behind the well thought out feedback, or to our partners who lacks presence.

I’m here to share that there is possibility in all that you desire by shifting our thoughts to hope, growth, positivity, trust, love and curiosity. If you are interested, keep coming back here as I will keep sharing details on how this shift happened, the power behind it and how the power of our mindset has changed all of my relationships.

With grace and kindness,

Cecily
